Research tasks:
- Research the nVidia MCP78U / MCP78S / MCP78H chipsets for Odin
MCP78U: GeForce 8300 video chipset and nForce 730a motherboard chipset
Target market: Performance users, release date is unknown
3DMark06 rating: 327 marks (per this site)
    Raven's Radeon Mobility 9700 3DMark 06 rating: 280 marks (per this site)
MCP78S: GeForce 8200 video chipset and nForce 730a motherboard chipset
Target market: Cheapskate users, release date is unknown
MCP78H: nForce 730a motherboard chipset - By itself, it does not have an onboard video interface
Target market: Cheapskate users, release date is unknown
- Monitor watercooling equipment websites.  FrozenCPU  Danger Den  PetraTech  Sidewinder Computers  PerformancePCs  Sharka Computers
- Research DBMail as a potential IMAP mail server
    Distribution license: GPL
Message searching via IMAP is currently broken as of March 25, 2008; It only searches through the subject lines of messages, not subject lines and bodies.
- Research which 512MB memory can be used in the LSI MegaRAID 320-2E
    Crucial 512MB DDR333 PC2700 CAS Latency 2.5 ECC Non-registered Single-sided 184-pin DIMM (CT6472Z335) [Froogle] ~$47.00
    Kingston 512MB DDR333 PC2700 CAS Latency 2.5 ECC Non-registered Single-sided? 184-pin DIMM (KVR333X72C25/512) [Froogle] ~$35.00
    Kingston 512MB DDR266 PC2100 CAS Latency 2 ECC Non-registered Double-sided 184-pin DIMM (KVR266X72C2/512)  [Froogle] ~$40.00
    512MB Micron -5G DDR266 CL2-2-2-5 ECC [No longer available]
- Search for a slot load Blu-Ray drive, preferably with a black bezel
Avoid Matsushita (Panasonic) because they never release new firmware for their optical drives that allows use of newer media,
    and because
their drives prevent DVD region code exception software

Research notes:
- 1000Base-TX(Gigabit Ethernet) transfers at 50% the throughput of 1000Base-SX(Gigabit Fiber).  This is because of the 4 wire pairs in Ethernet cable, two pairs are used for sending.  Each of the two pairs only operates at 250Mb/s.  Whereas 1000Base-SX(Gigabit Fiber) has two fiber cables that each operate at a full 1000Mb/s.
- 3ware has fully open source drivers for IDE RAID on Linux
- Socket 939 motherboards can not accept registered memory, only socket 940 motherboards work with registered (non-buffered) memory.
- PCI-Express bandwidth is 250MB/s full duplex on each lane.  E.G. An x4 PCIe interface has 1GB/s (1000MB/s) of bandwidth.
- Mount the watercooling fan and radiator on the far left 90mm fan port inside Zeus' case.
- Non-conductive coolants for Zeus
Integrity PC Fluid XP+ has temperature delta of 1° C - 2° C worse than DI H2O, shelf life of 5 years, and active life of 2 years. [Froogle]
VoyeurMods PC ICE has temperature delta of 2° C - 4° C worse than DI H2O, shelf life of 3 years, and active life of 2 years.  It also has exhibited formulation problems - some batches had dye sediment in them, it is more vulnerable to contamination than Fluid XP, and was initially marketed with false information - the manufacturer outright lied about its non-conductivity and cooling properties.
- Software-based Linux firewall
IP Cop has a built-in DHCP server that can serve:
      1) static IP addresses based upon the MAC of the client
      2) a boot image via DHCP
      3) It does not have built-in support for an LCD status display, but a third party Linux plugin named LCDProc provides this
        LCDProc VFD interface
        NetLCDClient plugin for LCDProc
        CheckConnect IPCOP network reset script
            cron instructions
       4) Support for Crystalfontz LCDs USB models
I will need to update the 'CFontzPacket_output()' function in CFontzPacket.c to add side LED intensity control.
Binary-only (ON/OFF) control of the Red & Green LEDs is already supported via an 8-bit integer
First 4 LOW bits are the green LEDs, and the last 4 HIGH bits are the red LEDs
             E.G. 0x1016 = 000100002 LED 0 Red
             E.G. 0x0116 = 000000012 LED 0 Green
             E.G. 0x2216 = 001000102 LED 1 Yellow
             E.G. 0xDD16 = 110111012 LED 0 Yellow  LED 1 Unlit  LED 2 Yellow  LED 3 Yellow
Page 39 in the manual describes how to modify PWM intensity for the LEDs
Notes: LED Hardware uses a 100 Hz PWM signal to control LED intensity.
           I will use 3 bits to set intensity.  000: Off - 0% (0x0)    001: 14% lit (0xE)    010: 28% lit (0x1C)   011: 43% lit (0x2B)    100: 57% lit (0x39)
           101: 71% lit (0x47)   110: 86% lit (0x56)    111: On - 100% (0x64)
             A 24-bit wide bitfield to control all 4 LEDs would work best;
6 bits per LED - the low bits control green intensity and the high bits select red intensity
It will convert Integer data to the bitfield
               E.G. 1677721510 = 2 ^ 24 - 110 = 1111111111111111111111112 = 0xFFFFFF16: All 4 LEDs lit Yellow
               E.G. 0: All LEDs off
Prefix the data, using either a Decimal (base 10) or a Hexidecimal (base 16) number, with an negative sign ( - ) to indicate the alternate output format?

- DVD Dual Layer media for Echo
  Brands to buy:
Verbatim: High reliability, Dual layer DVD-R media can be read in standalone DVD players
Sony: Rebranded Ritek/RiData media.  Only burns at 2.4X speed

  Brands to avoid:
RiData: Disc media is notoriously "blotchy", can't be read in standalone DVD players
Matrix: Bargain basement media.  Will only successfully burn at 1X speed and can't be read in standalone DVD players
Maxell: No data found on this brand
TDK: Terrible reliability.  Fails to burn 80% of the time.

System notes:
- Raven's Broadcom's BCM5788M Gigabit Ethernet chip does not support frames > 1500 bytes.
- Raven's Acer Launch application disables the onboard mouse interface.  It is not known if a newer version of the application would not do this.
- Raven's video adapter is non-standard, and the latest ATI Catalyst Mobility Radeon drivers will not install on it.  Because of this, Raven may not be able to play modern video games.
- Asus RX3141 Gigabit firewall may have problems with 9180 byte Jumbo frames
- Zeus' Marvell GigE port consistently suffers a non-error raising failure after about 2 - 3 days of use.  After this occurs, if the port is disabled via the Hardware Manager, the system will be unable to shut down.
- Zeus' nVidia GigE port caused Azureus to crash after about 2 - 3 days of use when a hard drive with low free space was used.
- AMD Dashboard Demo does not operate on Zeus
- Zeus' A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard has the following specifications:
    2 @ PCIe x16 slots, 1 @ PCIe x4 slot, 3 PCI slots
    ECC Memory support
Primary NIC: NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 Southbridge built-in Gigabit MAC with external Marvell 88E1111 PHY support
Secondary NIC: Marvell 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit LAN controller
Full length PCIe cards can not fit in the PCIe X4 slot due to the close proximity of the heatpipe
NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 chipset supports 9000 byte jumbo Ethernet frames
Marvell 88E8053 chipset supports 9012 byte jumbo Ethernet frames
Enabling "ActiveArmour" on nForce 4 chipsets will cause data corruption if TCP checksum offloading is also enabled.
- DVD jukeboxes should be placed on top of the rack cabinet, because two Sony DVD Jukeboxes can not fit inside a 37" internal depth 15U rackmount cabinet along with Zeus' current case
- Verbatim dual-layer 8X media loaded in the Sony DVD Changer's Matsushita Dual-Layer DVD Drive will burn at 2.4X speed, not at the drive's rated 4X speed.
